We love our Stromer electric bikes. I take mine down and up the Florida Canyon, through Balboa Park and on our busy San Diego streets. It gives me an immediate morning boost – my husband calls it my first cup of coffee. And while I love my Stromer ST2, I was totally thrilled to see the launch of the Stromer ST3 and ST5. It includes a revolutionary new platform from one the world's most innovative electric bike companies (no joke!).
We took one of our ST5s for a spin recently to see what's new and here's what we found:
Newly engineered SYNO Drive II motor- this made for smooth output and massive power
Modern geometry– more than just a sexy look, the new frame fits the larger 27.5 wheelset. The short chainstays and low bottom bracket keep you planted on the pavement and in always in control.
Wide custom Pirelli tires– this made it sticky when we went around corners and smooth rolling through the bumps. Note that a premium air suspension fork by WERN is coming in Spring 2019 and that will make the ride even smoother.
Improved OMNI onboard computer - color display, 3G connectivity
Anti-Theft System– like all Stromer's, you can remotely lock, unlock and track using your smartphone.
Other cool stuff– All wiring is concealed! Keyless battery ejection, seamless lock/unlock with Bluetooth, super bright 1250 lumen front light, brake lights that illuminate with pull of the brake lever and a 69 decibel horn.
So, if you're thinking of a Stromer, which one should you pick? Here's a couple of things to consider:
ST3
For $7,499, you get 600W motor with 44 Nm of torque and the BQ814 battery with a range between 30-90 miles. We find 55 miles to be a "real world" range in our hilly commute through San Diego. Rack is standard and it has four piston brakes in front. 11 speed Shimano XT/SLX mechanical shifting. You might choose the ST3 over the ST5 because of the comfort options (adjustable stem, ergonomic handlebars coming Spring 2019) and price point. There are two color options for the frame (Black or Cool White) and size choices (Comfort M; Sport M | L | XL)
ST5
You definitely get more for the $9,999 MSRP. It's a powerhouse in the electric bike category and is all about Sport. This means an extra high output Sport assistance mode with 48 Nm torque and a whopping 983 Wh battery for a range between 40-110 miles. The ST5 has four piston brakes all around instead of just the front giving you maximum control. The 11 speed Shimano Di2 electronic shifting is quick, precise and requires very little maintenance. There's only one color, but it's a very nice graphite. No comfort frame or stem options, but you do have Sport frame size choice (M | L | XL).
